Note from BorderSenses’ Director
BorderSenses
warmly welcomes you to join us in the publication of
the book, Memorias del Silencio: Footprints of the
Borderland Volume II. The border’s history
has always intertwined with those of the migrant workers.
This book reveals the ability of these workers to give
voices to their poignant experiences. We appreciate
the migrant workers in the field, and we believe that
we must support them as they persevere to grow, prosper
and achieve their own goals. Immigration politics has
no place in this simple vision.
This book represents a continuing collaboration between
BorderSenses and The El Paso Community College’s
Community Education Program (where either the students
or their families are migrant farm workers) directed
by Mr. Andres Muro and his committed staff.
This project, originally funded by The City of El Paso’s
Arts and Culture Department, resulted in the first volume
of the book. When the funding ended, we decided on continuing
this important work.
The writings, edited by Minerva Laveaga Duarte, are
all largely in Spanish with some English translations
for a varied audience. David Smith-Soto has captured
the emotion of the writers in his captivating photographs.
Our special thanks also go to web designer Alex Hernández
for his cover design. We thank everyone who has helped,
especially all the BorderSenses staff.
